Die Forscher um Mark Slifka von der Universität für Gesundheit und Wissenschaft in Beaverton untersuchten mehr als dreihundert Freiwillige, die im Laufe ihres Lebens gegen Pocken geimpft worden waren. 241 der Versuchsteilnehmer stammten aus den Vereinigten Staaten, 65 weitere aus insgesamt 34 anderen Ländern. Die Wissenschaftler prüften, wie lange und in welchem Ausmaß der Impfschutz anhielt. Dazu stellten sie fest, ob die Versuchspersonen Antikörper und so genannte T-Gedächtniszellen gegen den Impfstoff hatten.

Die Anzahl der vaccinia-spezialisierten T-Gedächtniszellen lässt im Laufe der Jahre nach einer Impfung langsam nach, fanden Slifka und seine Kollegen. Doch die Antikörper-Antwort des Immunsystems bleibt sogar über 75 Jahre hinweg stabil. Im Falle einer durch einen Terroranschlag ausgelösten Pockenepidemie wären somit vor allem diejenigen gefährdet, die nach den letzten größeren Pockenimpfungen Mitte der siebziger Jahre geboren wurden und daher keinen Impfschutz mehr haben.
