Auf den Straßen Chaos. Ampeln waren ausgefallen, Kreuzungen waren blockiert. Maurice Janus (52) fackelte nicht lange: An der 76. Straße/Ecke Queens Boulevard stellte er sich mitten drauf, stoppte Autos, winkte Leute durch.

Die Stimmung in der Stadt: angespannt, aber von großer Panik keine Spur. Einige Leute nutzten den Blackout für eine Spontan-Party. Viele Bars in den Szenevierteln wurden zum Treffpunkt für Gestrandete - auch ohne Licht und Musik. Tom Ruffalo (33) genehmigte sich erst mal einen Drink im „Limerick House“ an der West23rd Street. Bei Kerzenschein fand er's gemütlich. „Es sollte jede Woche einen Stromausfall geben.“ Dass zu Hause seine Frau mit den beiden Kindern wartete, störte ihn nicht.

Das Geschäft brummte. „Wir hatten am Abend etwa drei Mal so viel Umsatz wie sonst“, so Barfrau Catherine Henderson (26).

Mark A. Green (26) hatte es auch nicht eilig. Sie beobachtete die Leute, die verzweifelt versuchten, in überfüllte Busse zu steigen. „Survival of the fittest“, grinste er, nur die Harten kommen durch.

Für ein junges Pärchen war der Stromausfall Romantik pur: „So schön war der Vollmond über New York noch nie.“
